Wall tapestries have been around since Hellenistic times. Greek wall tapestry hangings have been found preserved in the desert – Tarim Basin dating all the way back to the 3rd century BC. Wall tapestries reached a new stage in Europe around the fourteenth century AD. France and the Netherlands were the first to jump into the textile trade and hone their skills. In the 14th and 15th centuries the industry was thriving in France. These were expensive and only the royalty seemed to afford them for the palace and the castles. Then the French Revolution came and nearly all of these beautiful tapestries were burned up to get to the gold used in the threads of these weavings. A few were saved and are housed in museums for safe keeping and the general public to enjoy.

Famous tapestries are now more commonly seen as reproductions woven on jacquard looms. For more information see Decor4U. The European wall tapestries are fabulous and the L Pansu tend to be the finest and highest quality fine woven good coming out of Europe.
